My family
me and my mum
Father and son
me and my son
When someone do something that stuns you, wouldn’t you ask them this question, “Why are you like that?” Something outrageous a little boy did, stunned us all, on the day we checked out the hotel. My son, Nick was having a cold and he could not stop sneezing. So, he was holding the whole box of tissues in his hand while walking out of the hotel. Suddenly, one boy of age about 10 to 12 came in front of him and pull off a few tissues from the box and ran to his parents. One would have guessed that his parent will reprimand him for such bad behavior but guess what? They did not, they just walked away without a word. We were all dumb founded!! I don't fault the kid but his parents for bad upbringing. My mum used to teach me to behave well when I was a kid, because she said if I don't, people will view that as "moe kar kow" (bad upbringing) and wonder why you are like that. I am sure at that moment, we all must be thinking, “Why were they (the kid and the parents) like that?” LOL! That was exactly what I uttered when I saw my cooked DIY salted eggs.
Let me explain. This was how the DIY salted eggs came about. My dear friend, Ping of Ping’s Pickings had a post on DIY salted eggs. Her salted eggs were very impressive, so impressive that I wanted to be a Copy Cat.
Yes, I used her recipe to make my own salted eggs. After waited anxiously for 14 days for them to be ready, I could not wait a day longer. On the 15th day, I quickly boiled three to try . When I cut them into halves, OH MY GOD!! I saw a pale center.
I could not help but exclaimed, “Why are you like that?” I wondered what step did Aunty Lucy missed. Fortunately, they were tasty and the pale center was not hard. It was not such a big disappointment after all. Oh well, I had a nice Teo Chew porridge meal with other side dishes that my mum prepared.
Sorry Ping, I was a proud Copy Cat when I copied the Rosemary Olive Focaccia from Alan of Travellingfoodies some months ago...

By the way, my trip photos are almost ready so I promise I will start to tell you all about it from my next post onwards. As usual, Aunty Lucy did lots of interesting things there that you will not believe. Stay tune!

Hello Quaypo
ReplyDeleteI still think your salted eggs are perfect! It always taste so much better when you make it at home... isn't it, though you think "why is it like that?"
Thanks Mel, you are so kind to say that.
Deletequay po,
ReplyDeleteoh my, that is what i always tell my son. what you did wrong other, ppl won't laugh at you but your mummy and daddy will be the one because of not teaching you manner and this will disgrace us. i wonder if he understand.
your salty egg is so delicious looking.. wonder if quay lo eat this egg?? i would like to make some today since i brought a lot of eggs. thanks for sharing!
Your son will understand. When my son was a little boy, I am like you, always wonder if what we teach him sank in but when he grows up, we see they did:D My Quay Lo is not a big fan of salted eggs.
DeleteI have never tried salted eggs, but have seen many on blogs, and heard all the talk about them. Your look very good to me. I already check Ping's blog. You'll get it right!
ReplyDeleteI have say I am surprised to some children's behavior now a days...working in an elementary school I see it all. I always smile when people compliment me on my daughter's behavior...after all it takes a lot of work bring them up right :)
I am sure you see all sorts of behavior. I am sure you are a proud mum and when others compliment your daughter's behavior. It is a big job to be good parents:D
DeleteAt least the little boy could have asked your son for a couple of tissues which would have been the right thing to do instead of stealing them which is really bad manners indeed :-).
ReplyDeleteExactly, but then if the boy does not know, his parents should know better. I really sympathize with the little boy because his parents don't seem to care.
DeleteI always teach my children to be well mannered, just simple things like saying "thank you" to the waitress that brings them their food in the restaurant or pours tea for them. It really brightens up their (waitresses) day.
ReplyDeleteYou are bringing up your kiddies the right way. They are going to be well respected and happy adults. Kudos to you and your hubby for being loving and caring parents.
DeleteBut they look sooooo beautiful leh, your salted eggs. Maybe it has not been salted long enough - I've bought some like that before...but I loved them nonetheless. If you don't want, send them over... I would thank you so very much! LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Arthur. I followed the recipe and waited 14 days. Maybe next batch I wait for another week? I wish you are are my neighbor so I have another guinea pig to taste my food. LOL! If only you are in KL, I truly will send some over to you.
DeleteI think yours ( I meant the salted eggs la ) look good though. There are times I bought the salted eggs and after cooking, they have a paler ring in the center too. I want to be copy cat too after seeing these. This weekend I will go buy some and made them myself...can show off to the Wild Boar my own homemade salted eggs eh :p
ReplyDeleteI look forward to see your salted eggs. No pale center okay? hehe
DeleteYou are right, Quay Po. Parenting skills are very lacking these days. Your salted eggs look good and I love them too. Yah, I saw Ping's posting on this and meant to try but forgot. Now you have reminded me!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you Phong Hong. Parents are too busy trying to make money and forget to spend time with their children. Most younger generation nowadays are raised by maids not their parents.
DeleteSome days a simple white porridge and salted egg make my day! I never like salted egg as a kid, but as I grow older, I tend to be more adventurous when come to food and try them. I still dont take the yellow yolk though! :p
ReplyDeleteAs for the bad upbringing, yes, it is always parents' fault when their kids misbehaved. It is hard because I have 2 young kids to raise.
Rose, I am sure your kids will be fine. I can see that you will raise them well.
DeleteI always love it when you write a post, not only the recipe for the dish, but also the recipe of life...;) You always taught me something.. ;) Today I've learn to behave , and portray how I am brought up in my family.. Sometimes, if the child doesn't know how to respect others or being rude to others, shame on the family. Anyway,Nice salted eggss~ was wondering when will I have a chance to try the homemade salted egg..?;P hmmmm
ReplyDeleteThanks Eunice. We learn as we live.
DeleteThe salted eggs look great!!! and thanks for the focaccia shout out once again!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Alan and you are most welcome for the shout out! Anytime for you.
DeleteThe perfect companion with plain porridge!
ReplyDeleteSalted is a must have item for plain porridge.
DeleteBut it still looks good to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks Yee Ling. Next time make again, you want some?
DeleteWelcome back! Don't even get me started on kids with no manners....... Anyway teochew porridge is my go-to meal when I'm in need of comfort, or sick. I've never tried home made salted eggs though. In fact I don't think I've even had salted eggs for a long long time... To me yours look really good! Are they meant to be darker?
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelly. hahaha, I reckon you must have your stories to tell about kids who have no manners. Yes when I am not well, my mum always make porridge for me. Yes, a good salted egg is not suppose to have the pale center.
DeleteA nice read again from you. I was wondering how you're going to connect your story with your recipe..hehe. omg, your mum's teochew porridge with side dishes looked to die for!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you enjoy the read Carolyn. Well, when one grows older, there are so many stories to tell. Sometimes, I really don't how it get connected to the food I want to share though. hehe
DeleteIt looks fine, Lucy. Don't be too disappointed. I'm proud just for the fact that you've even tried my recipe out. I'm not sure why you've got a lighter center in the yolks, but I think it probably just needs a longer brining time. I used free-range duck eggs ... don't know if it makes that much of a difference tho.
ReplyDeleteSome parents really need to be educated on bringing up children. Most kids today are so spoilt rotten, I'm afraid of what kind of adults they are going to become. I fear for the future of mankind. It's a selfish and materialistic world out there.
Thanks See Fu!! I was not too disappointed as they taste good, just not pretty like yours. Next batch, I will try to wait for another few more days before I cook them and see. I share the same fear when I see selfish children who have no manners at all.
DeleteYour salted eggs are beautiful, I couldn't tell the difference if you haven't pointed out. Sometimes I see food stalls selling eggs that are pale in the center too, i thought that's just normal :D
ReplyDeleteYes, I see those sold in the store have pale center as well but I never liked it. I want those like Ping's, Perfect!
DeleteI never know we can preserved our own salted eggs. Must try to DIY some.. Guess home made is always much better right?
ReplyDeleteOh you can, now you can try my dear.
DeleteLove your family pictures. Everyone looks so joyful.
ReplyDeleteA 10-12yro boy should know better. If not, then it's the parents fault (or they're not good examples). Words such as please, may I, excuse me, thank you, or, no, thank you are basic manners. My kids understand them as 'magic' words that can get them what they need and it makes people feel good too.
Salted eggs! Looks delicious. Did you use chicken or duck eggs? I haven't eaten salted eggs in so long. I could really use some right now :)
Aw, your kids are blessed who have parents like you. They will grow up to be fine adults. You will be very proud of them. I used duck eggs.
DeleteExcellent family shots, is this in front of the hotel or your own house?
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
Thanks Filip. We took the pic in front of the Smoke House in Camerons. It is a hotel cum restaurant.
DeleteFirst time I see salted eggs, I will also try this recipe. Cameron Highlands, looks like a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderfull week.
Camerons is a nice place for a short vacation. The weather is cold up there.
DeleteEverything looks delicious. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your positive comment always.
DeleteI like the photo of u n your son. very nice. Hope you did frame one up in the house.
ReplyDeleteThat is my favorite pic of me and Nick. Unfortunately, it was taken by a point and shoot camera and the resolution is not good to be a framed photo.
DeleteLO....my neighbour gave me some home made salted eggs too. Hers one was ok. She dont know how to make. Her mom gave her.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, about Nick and the tissue, we cencounter that in a restaurant too.
There was a man duno know he "chi sin" or "sotplug". Kept eyeing our table. his own table have tooth pick and tissue paper but he walk over to our table to take tissue...then come again to take toothpick.
hahaha, I think that man is both, Chi Sin and Sotplug!!
ReplyDeletehehe i'll say the same thing, but shorter - "why like that!" in fact, this is something i always wail when i see my failed bakes :S i think the salted egg yolks look good, but I'm too impatient to try them on my own - buying them is so easy ;p
ReplyDeleteJanine, you are right buying salted eggs is easier but the fun in DIY salted eggs is in the wating. LOL!
DeleteYour salted egg remind me I have to do another batch, they are fresh and yummy right? Looking forward to your US post. Did not know you will have a gathering in Ipoh, if not staying overnight, i wish to join.
ReplyDeleteSonia US post coming up. I am also waiting for your Japan posts. I will email you about my Ipoh Trip.
DeleteYou have such a lovely looking family, Veronica. I too especially like the picture with your son:)
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine what anyone would be thinking to take some tissues like that, perhaps there was an immediate need or something. Still no excuse though.
I have never heard of salted eggs before. I must say, it sure sounds intriguing. I will have to do further research. I do love Focaccia though and I have been promising myself to bake some soon. We'll see...
Well, it looks like you are bringing the letter X once again to the picnic. I know I'm thrilled but I was hoping for your sake you would get an easier letter. Although, that Brazilian dish does sound intriguing. Thank you so much for joining in on the fun. We are going to have one heck of a Picnic this year!!! "See" you there!!!
Thanks louise. I am going to get the ingredients for my 'X" dish. See you at the Picnic. Hugs.
DeleteAs always, love your family photos, Veronica! They always give me that 'warm and fuzzy' feeling, seeing the joy and happiness on all of your faces. For a moment, I thought you were posting the Calif. trip photos. Hopefully you will post some, as well.
ReplyDeleteTo be perfectly honest, I've never had salted egg, and I love hard boiled eggs, cut them in half and salt them; but this is entirely different and I know I would love them...wow, have to wait 2 whole weeks for them to marinade?
They look so inviting and delicious...and BTW, Ping is also a copy cat because she took the recipe from Sonia, ha, ha! I guess we're all copy cats in one-way or another, as long as we don't get too 'territorial' and get into a 'cat fight'
Hugs,
Hi Quay Po, your homemade salted eggs look yum yum & the yolks are so attracted my eyes balls.... Haha....salted Egg us one if my favourite not when I eat porridge but Nasi kandar, bak zhang "glutinous dumpling", moon cake ..... Suddenly craving for it...
ReplyDeleteBack to serious topic about bringing children nowadays :))... We parents can't be too harsh nor too soft! Like half boiled eggs! 0) Sometimes we talk nicely like friends sometime we parents as the authority figure....once I was told " control yr children when they are young, listen to them When they are grown up kids.. ".....
